Key Stage 1 Awareness Days
Earth Day

Earth Day on the 22nd of April is a perfect day to remind your class about the many ways we can look after the planet through simple everyday actions, such as recycling, litter picking, reducing waste and use of plastic bags and making gardens more wildlife friendly. Select individual activities, or schedule a whole day around Earth Day themes.

Session 1 Recycling

Objectives

Art and Design

  • Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.
  • Use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.

Design and Technology

  • Select from and use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks (cutting, shaping, joining & finishing).

English

  • Develop pleasure in reading, motivation to read, vocabulary and understanding by listening to, discussing and expressing views about a wide range of contemporary and classic poetry, stories and non-fiction at a level beyond that at which children can read independently.
  • Use spoken language to develop understanding through speculating, hypothesizing, imagining and exploring ideas.
  • Participate in discussions, presentations, performances, role play, improvisations and debate.

Music

  • Use voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes.
  • Play tuned and untuned instruments musically.

Lesson Planning

On the theme of the 3 Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) see what you can do with recycled materials.

Children will:

  • Find out about recycling.
  • Create juink model robots.
  • Learn the 3Rs message.

Session 2 Reducing Waste

Objectives

Session 3 Green Environments

Objectives

  • Select from and use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks (cutting, shaping, joining & finishing).
  • Build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger, stiffer and more stable.

English

  • Develop pleasure in reading, motivation to read, vocabulary and understanding by:
    • being encouraged to link what they read or hear read to their own experiences.
    • participating in discussion about what is read to them, taking turns and listening to what others say.
  • Use spoken language to develop understanding through speculating, hypothesising, imagining and exploring ideas.

Session 4 Eco-Schools Award

Objectives

Art and Design

  • Participate in discussions, presentations, performances, role play, improvisations and debate.
  • Listen to and discuss a wide range of poems, stories and non-fiction at a level beyond that at which they can read independently.

  • Use their observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions.
  • Gather and record data to help in answering questions.

PE

  • Perform dances using simple movement patterns.

Lesson Planning

A carousel of activities gives you choices about how to get children thinking about 'How green is our school?'.

Children will:

  • Find out how to gain a bronze eco-award and start working towards it.
  • Research and share ideas about an eco-topic.
  • Make up a fitness routine.

Session 5 Conclusion

Objectives

English

  • Write sentences by: saying out loud what they are going to write about; composing a sentence orally before writing it; read aloud their writing clearly enough to be heard by their peers and the teacher.
  • Participate in discussions, presentations, performances, role-play, improvisations and debate.

Lesson Planning

Celebrate by looking at some of the work from our focus activities. Allow children the opportunity to share their work and discuss elements that they are proud of. Think about favourite moments and work and talk about information learnt during the topic.

Children will:

  • Consolidate their learning about Earth Day.
  • Write an Earth Day promise
