Key Stage 1 Awareness Days
Walk to School Week

Creative curriculum activities challenge your children to take part in Walk to School Week and make a real improvement to their happiness, health and wellbeing. There are opportunities for daily maths activities as different data is collected daily for block diagrams. Children analyse data and draw conclusions. Additional topics such as footwear road safety and traffic provide extension activities for each day.

Session 1 Monday Morning

Objectives

Maths

  • Sequence events in chronological order using language.
  • Recognise and use language relating to dates, including days of the week, weeks, months, years.
  • Interpret and construct simple pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams and simple tables.
  • Ask and answer simple questions by counting the number of objects in each category: sorting the categories by quantity.
  • Ask and answer questions about totalling and comparing categorical data.

Lesson Planning

How did you come to school today?

Children will:

  • Begin to think about grouping data to assemble a pictogram.
  • Begin to use vocabulary of comparison: greater than/less than.
  • Say the days of the week in correct sequential order.

  • 10cm square plain paper for drawing of mode of travel
  • 5mins timer
  • A1 paper pictograph prepared with 10cm grid

Session 2 Tuesday Morning

Make 'How did you come to school today' block diagram.

Children will:

  • Begin to think about grouping data to assemble a block diagram.
  • Begin to use correct data handling vocabulary.

Session 3 Wednesday Morning

Session 6 Footwear

Objectives

  • Use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.

Design and Technology

  • Select from and use a range of tools & equipment to perform practical tasks.
  • Select from and use a wide range of materials and components, including textiles according to their characteristics.

Lesson Planning

Sort footwear and assess suitability for different activities.

Children will:

  • Think about the different functions of footwear and begin to understand the qualities and uses of different materials.
  • Represent different uses of footwear by drawing and painting.
  • Measure using non-standard units.

Session 7 Road Safety

Objectives

Art and Design

  • Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.
  • Use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.

Geography

  • Use simple compass directions and locational and directional language to describe the location of features and routes on a map.
  • Devise a simple map; and use and construct basic symbols in a key.

Music

  • Use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes.

Lesson Planning

Consider road safety in relation the the children's routes to school.

Children will:

  • Locate their homes on simple map of the locality.
  • Use simple compass directions.
  • Think about road safety and learn the Green Cross Code.

Session 8 Wheels Day

Objectives

PSHE and Citizenship

  • Rules for, and ways of, keeping safe, including basic road safety.

Lesson Planning

Organise a 'Wheels Day' and consider how different wheeled vehicles work and how to keep safe on them.

Children will:

  • Think about keeping safe whilst on their bicycles.
  • Learn some road safety rules.

Session 9 Traffic Survey

  • Use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of their school and its grounds and the key human and physical features of its surrounding environment.

Survey and analyse the traffic on your school's road.

  • Conduct a simple traffic survey and draw conclusions from the data compiled.

  • Describe the importance for humans of exercise.

Design posters to encourage people to maintain benefits of walking to school.

Children will:

  • Design and create a poster to summarize the benefits of walking to school.
