Same and Different

The first two pre-sessions are an introduction to the topic. Appreciate that although there are many physical differences between plants and animals (including humans), these differences are not necessarily good or bad or important to function or ability.

Session 1 Same and Different (A)

Objectives

Science

  • Describe reproductive process in plants and animals
  • Describe how micro-organisms, plants and animals are classified into groups, according to observable characteristics and based on similarities and differences.

PSHE

  • Research, discuss and debate topical issues, problems and events that are of concern to them and offer their recommendations to appropriate people.
  • Differences and similarities between people arise from a number of factors, including family, cultural, ethnic, racial and religious diversity, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and disability.

Lesson Planning

Discover the many physical differences between plants and animals (including humans) and that these are not necessarily good or bad nor important to function or ability.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To appreciate that there are physical differences between members of the same species.

Children will:

  • Understand that there are physical differences between members of the same groups of animals or plants.
  • Understand that physical differences can lead to a hierarchy of good/not so good.
  • Understand that physical differences are not necessarily important to function or ability.

Session 2 Same and Different (B)

Objectives

Science

  • Describe reproductive process in plants and animals

PSHE

  • Appreciate the range of national, regional, religious and ethnic identities in the United Kingdom
  • Consider the lives of people living in other places, and people with different values and customs
  • Differences and similarities between people arise from a number of factors, including family, cultural, ethnic, racial and religious diversity, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and disability
  • Research, discuss and debate topical issues, problems and events that are of concern to them and offer their recommendations to appropriate people.

Lesson Planning

Look in more detail at differences between people living in Britain. Discuss our multi-cultural society. Share poems in We are Britain by Benjamin Zephaniah to inspire children to write poems about themselves.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To appreciate that there are similarities and differences between people.

Children will:

  • Understand that there are many similarities and differences between people.
  • Realise that differences are often neither good or bad, they are just different!
