Oceans and Seas of the World

Learn about the seas that surround the UK. Develop knowledge of the oceans and continents of the world. Investigate how waves are caused and how they move. Inspired by the stormy seascapes of J. M. W. Turner, use a variety of techniques to create textured watercolour paintings and turn them into sea-storm collages.

Objectives

Geography

  • Name and locate the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas.
  • Use world maps, atlases and globes to identify the United Kingdom and its countries, as well as the oceans studied at this key stage.

Music

  • Listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music.
  • Use voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes.

Lesson Planning

Learn about the seas that surround the UK. Play a simple travelling game to consolidate knowledge.

Teaching Outcomes
 To recognise the UK on a range of maps, naming and locating the seas that surround the UK as well as the country’s 4 constituent nations.
To listen to a well known song and sing it with the rest of the class.

Children will:

  • Recognise the UK on a range of different maps and globes.
  • Name and locate the major seas surrounding the UK.
  • Name and locate the country’s 4 constituent nations.
  • Listen to a version of When I Was One and sing this with the rest of the class.

Session 2 Oceans of the world

Geography

  • Name and locate the world’s seven continents and five oceans.
  • Use world maps, atlases and globes to identify the United Kingdom and its countries, as well as the countries, continents and oceans studied at this key stage.

Maths

  • Add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20.
  • Compare, describe and solve practical problems for lengths and heights.

Lesson Planning

Develop knowledge of the oceans and continents of the world. Play a world passport game to consolidate knowledge.

Teaching Outcomes
 To name the 5 oceans and 7 continents of the world and locate them on a map, understanding that the UK lies in the Atlantic Ocean.
To count the world’s oceans and continents, comparing them in width.

Children will:

  • Be introduced to the names and locations of the world’s continents and oceans.
  • Add up the numbers of oceans and continents.
  • Compare the oceans of the world in terms of width.
  • Recognise that the UK lies within the Atlantic Ocean.

Investigate the way waves are caused and how they move. Use investigations to build wave word banks.

To understand what causes waves in the sea and what effect waves have on beaches and coastlines.
To attempt spellings of a variety of powerful descriptive words describing the movements of waves.

Children will:

  • Discuss the causes of waves in the world’s oceans.

  • Develop their vocabulary for describing the movements and effects of waves.

  • Develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour.

History

  • Understand historical concepts such as continuity and change, similarity and difference and use them to make connections and draw contrasts.

Lesson Planning

Be inspired by the seascapes of JMW Turner. Use a variety of techniques to create different watercolour paintings ready to create a sea-storm collage.

Teaching Outcomes
 To use a range of techniques (including using salt, blotting and colour mixing) to give texture and dynamism to watercolour work.
To discuss differences between the modern world and the 19th century by looking at works by J. W. M. Turner, producing evidence to back up observations of change in history.

Children will:

  • Learn about the paintings and life of J. M. W. Turner.
  • Discuss differences between their own dress and that of Turner.
  • Use the techniques of blotting and adding salt to watercolours to create different effects of texture and patterning.
  • Mix colours to create a range of hues appropriate to paintings of the sea.
  • Discuss why they like particular paintings, explaining how they make them feel.

Session 5 Creating sea collages

  • Use painting to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.
  • Develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.

Lesson Planning

Use the watercolour paintings from Session 4 to create sea-storm collages.

Teaching Outcomes
 To create a collage from paper strips and other imagery, using scissors to carefully cut around elements within the collage.

Children will:

  • Create a collage of a sailing ship on a stormy sea.
  • Comment upon their own and others’ work.
