The LKS2 National Curriculum statutory content for Year 3 is arranged in mathematical topic blocks over the year. Each block is divided into units. Each unit is focussed around one or two specific skills within that topic.

Due to the amount of subject matter in the National Curriculum, there is not much ‘wriggle room’ if teachers want to teach every unit in each block. In Autumn, the first week is for elicitation – finding out where your children are. We’ve also allowed 2 weeks so that if children need extra time on any topic, you can extend a particular block or unit. But in Spring, only 5 days have no allocated teaching, and in Summer only 2 do not. The teaching gets tighter as the children progress through Year 3 and become more mature. You may need to select carefully what to leave out.
