Teaching and Group Activities for Understanding
Day 1 Teaching
Write numbers 990, 991, 992…999, 1000. What number comes next? Show how this is written 1001. Continue 1002, 1003… 1010. Show the partially completed 1001 to 1100 grid and point to one of the gaps. Children write the missing number on whiteboards. Point to other numbers on the grid. Children say the number, then ask, e.g. What is 10 more than 1073?
Use the in-depth problem-solving investigation ‘Coded Hundred Square’ from NRICH as today’s group activity.
Or, use these activities:
-- Find missing numbers on a 1001-1100 number grid.
-- Give clues for a mystery number on a 1001-1100 number grid.
Day 2 Teaching
Show 346, then 1346 made using 1000s, 100s, 10s, 1s place value cards. Model writing a PV addition, i.e. 1000 + 300 + 40 + 6. So, 1346 is like 346 but with a 1000 added. Show the 1000 card; discuss how the other 3 cards cover the 3 zeroes. Give each pair a set of place value cards and call out numbers for them to make/ write PV additions for.
-- Make 4-digit numbers using given thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.
-- Make 4-digit numbers using place value cards.
Day 3 Teaching
Show a landmarked number line 0-10,000 with thousands marked. Children work in 3s to write a 4-digit number ending in 0. Ask a group to read theirs. Demonstrate marking it on the line. Choose a group whose number comes in a different 1000s interval and model marking it on the line. Repeat.
-- Make 4-digit numbers and place on a landmarked line 0-10,000.
-- Make two 4-digit numbers and find 5 numbers that lie between them.
