Celebrate Roald Dahl Day

Suzie Hunt By Suzie Hunt

Every year on the 13th September we celebrate the birthday of Roald Dahl.

Of course, simply spending some time reading one or more of Roald Dahl's stories is a fantastic way for your class to spend Roald Dahl Day!

But if you want to study one of the author's most popular books in-depth, Hamilton have written an excellent Year 3 English block focussed on the Fantastic Mr Fox. With integrated comprehension, SPaG and composition, this block provides everything you need to teach a range of literacy skills whilst reading this beloved Roald Dahl tale.

Celebrate Roald Dahl Day in Year 3 with 'Fantastic Mr Fox'

Through Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox, children explore plot, character and tension and how these elements of storytelling come together to create excitement! They learn about direct speech and tense and write their own fantastic stories.

Choose from the 5 units on offer, each with a different focus.

  • Introduction to setting, character and style of Fantastic Mr Fox
  • Punctuating dialogue; inference and prediction
  • Characters, setting and plot
  • SPaG: Present perfect form
  • Write an exciting story in the style of Fantastic Mr Fox

Let Roald Dahl Teach Year 2 Children About Exclamation Marks!

In Day 2 of Unit 2 from our block on Monster Poems for Year 2, we feature the poem 'Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf' by Roald Dahl - great to use when you are studying exclamation marks! In the teaching for day 2, children focus on the features of exclamatory sentences and their uses. Children can identify exclamations in Roald Dahl’s 'Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf' as you read it to them.

Weekly Plans Based on Work by Roald Dahl

Hamilton offer a number of inspiring weekly plans constructed around Roald Dahl books.

  • For year 5 children, try our weekly plan about Biographies and Autobiographies. Use biographies and autobiographical writing of Roald Dahl and Michael Morpurgo to identify features of biographies and autobiographies.
  • For year 3 children, try our weekly plan about Plays and Dialogue. Write and perform two playscripts: one based on a proverb and one based on a chapter from Roald Dahl's The Witches.
