Discover the myths and tales that the Ancient Egyptians told about the creation of the world and the lives of the gods and goddesses they worshipped. Take part in the recreation of an Ancient Egyptian festival procession.

Session 1 Creation story

Objectives

History

Lesson Planning

Retell the Ancient Egyptian creation story and understand why different versions of the creation story exist.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To know the Ancient Egyptian creation story and understand that there are many versions of the story.
  • To compare different versions of the Ancient Egyptian creation story (myth) and retell the story.

Children will:

  • Retell the Ancient Egyptian creation story.
  • Understand why different versions of the creation story exist.

Session 2 Osiris, Isis, Seth and Horus

  • Increase their familiarity with a wide range of books, including myths from other cultures.

  • Summarise the main ideas drawn from more than one paragraph.
  • Use further organisational and presentational devices to structure text.
  • Participate in role play.

Art

  • Improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing.

Lesson Planning

Explain why Ancient Egyptians told their myths; retell the story of Isis, Osiris, Seth and Horus using role-play and a comic strip in the style of Marcia Williams.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To learn another myth of Ancient Egypt and appreciate the fact that the Ancient Egyptians used these myths to try to explain the world around them.
  • To compare different versions of the story of Isis, Osiris, Horus and Seth and retell the story in different ways.
  • To draw scenes from the story of Isis, Osiris, Horus and Seth in the style of the Ancient Egyptians.

Children will:

Lesson Planning

Understand that the Ancient Egyptians worshipped many different gods & goddesses; plan, make and evaluate an Ancient Egyptian headdress.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To understand that the Ancient Egyptians worshipped many gods and goddesses and that the gods and goddesses could be recognised by different symbols.
  • To plan and make an Ancient Egyptian headdress.

Children will:

  • Understand that the Ancient Egyptians worshipped many different gods & goddesses.
  • Describe the headdresses of a range of gods and goddesses.
  • Plan and make an Ancient Egyptian headdress.
  • Evaluate their Ancient Egyptian headdress.

Session 4 Temples and priests

Investigate the main sections of a typical Ancient Egyptian temple; learn some of the duties carried out by priests and priestesses and make a model temple.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To understand the purpose of Ancient Egyptian temples and describe the basic functions of priests.
  • To plan and make an Ancient Egyptian Temple with a removable roof.

Children will:

  • Describe the main sections of a typical Ancient Egyptian temple.
  • List some of the duties carried out by priests and priestesses.
  • Make a model temple.
