I'm A Superhero

How can you bring out the superhero in yourself? Explore being the best you can be and what makes you unique and special. Consider you can help your body be super strong and healthy, your brain – super sparky and your actions – super helpful. Draw self-portraits. Take part in superhero training and a special superhero ceremony with medals and certificates.

Session 1 I Am Me!

Objectives

Early learning goals

  • Use phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible.
  • Safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.
  • Use what thas been learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes.
  • Represent ideas, thoughts and feelings through art.

Lesson Planning

Look carefully at ourselves: paint a self-portrait for the gallery; measure each other; and write description of yourself.

Children will:

  • Think about our physical bodies and create self-portraits ready for the Superheroes Portrait Gallery.
  • Write simple sentences to create a written description to accompany a self-portrait.

Session 2 Amazing Me!

Objectives

Early learning goals

  • Make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur, and talk about changes.
  • Answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions about experiences and in response to stories or events.
  • Express self effectively, showing awareness of listeners’ needs.
  • Develop own explanations by connecting ideas and events.
  • Write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others.

Lesson Planning

Look at how your body works by investigating your 5 senses, bones, teeth, muscles, blood, heart and brain.

Children will:

  • Investigate their Five Senses by carrying out simple tests, recording simple data, talking about what they have found out and how they found it out.
  • Record and communicate their findings and begin to use simple scientific language.

Session 3 Amazing Me 2!

An alternative, shorter session investigating the 5 senses through popcorn.

Children will:

  • Identify the 5 senses and the associated body part
  • Make simple recordings of science investigations

  • Corn for popping
  • Microwave popcorn
  • Various flavours of popcorn
  • Bowls to serve popcorn

Session 4 Unique Me!

Objectives

  • Represent own ideas, thoughts and feelings through art, music and role-play.

Children will:

  • Learn that humans also have a personality and imagination which makes each unique.
  • Express their uniqueness in a creative way.
  • Appreciate and celebrate the uniqueness of others.
