Imagine what it would have been like to be one of the world’s first paleontologists! Immerse yourself in imaginative dinosaur learning as you go back in time and imagine the UK covered in forest, swamp, rivers and lakes. What do we know about dinosaurs and how do we know it?

Session 1 Dinosaurs Galore!

Objectives

Early learning goals

  • Make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur.
  • Talk about changes.

Science

  • Sort and classify things according to whether they are living, dead or where never alive.

History

  • Learn about the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements.

Lesson Planning

Imagine what it would have been like to be one of the world’s first ‘dino experts’/paleontologists!

Children will:

  • Use seashells, pebbles, stones and other natural objects; pencils, clay tools, bottle tops and other manmade objects to make impressions in clay
  • Sort objects and images of objects into 3 categories, living, dead or never alive.
  • Make dinosaur shaped biscuits.
  • Learn about Mary Anning, while eating dinosaur biscuits.
  • Learn tongue twister ‘She sells seashells on the sea shore’.

You Will Need

  • Ingredients for biscuits
  • Clay or salt dough and natural items, seashells, pebbles, stones
  • Manmade items, pencils, clay tools, bottle tops
  • Books: Stone Girl Bone Girl: The Story of Mary Anning of Lyme Regis and Ten Little Dinosaurs

Session 2 DinoExperts

Objectives

History

  • Know and understand the history of these islands as a coherent, chronological narrative from the earliest times to the present day.
  • Develop an awareness of the past, using common words and phrases relating to the passing of time.
  • Understand some of the ways in which we find out about the past and identify different ways in which it is represented.

Lesson Planning

Go back in time, imagine the UK covered in forest, swamp, rivers and lakes. What do we know about dinosaurs and how do we know?

Children will:

  • Imagine the time of the dinosaurs.
  • Work out how to put together a selection of dried pasta shapes to form a dinosaur skeleton.
  • Play the Dinosaur Quiz.
  • Experience fossils at first-hand.

You Will Need

  • Current photo of class
  • Long length of rope to make a timeline
  • Labels for timeline
  • Picture of babies and other images
  • Fossils and ammonites

Session 3 Let's create a dinosaur!

Objectives

Early learning goals

  • Exploring and using media and materials.
  • Being imaginative.

Art

  • Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.
  • Use drawing , painting and sculpture to develop and share ideas, experiences and imagination.
  • Develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture line, shape, form and space.

Lesson Planning

Children use paint, collage, printing to create a dinosaur and write dino expert facts to describe it. 

Children will:

  • Look at present day animal camouflage.
  • Find clues in photos of dinosaur bones and skeletons to work out possible habitats and habits.
  • Design, paint and collage imagined dinosaur picture.
  • Become the expert on this dinosaur and record dino expert facts as captions to create class display.

You Will Need

  • A1 or A3 art paper for each child
  • Selection of collage materials
  • Photos of animals depicting different camouflage features
