Dinosaur Stomp

How did dinosaurs move? What is the evidence? Learn about fossilised footprints and their sizes; make dinosaur feet, masks and a cape; create dinosaur movements and routines for a final dinosaur stomp!

Session 1 Dinosaur Tracks

Objectives

Early learning goals

  • Make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur, and talk about changes.
  • Use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems.
  • Represent own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role-play and stories.

History

  • Understand some of the ways in which we find out about the past and identify different ways in which it is represented.

Maths

  • Measure and begin to record the following: lengths and heights.

Art

  • Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products, to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.

Lesson Planning

Read the book Dinosaur Tracks by Kathleen Zoefiel. Find out how to step back into history through the footprint of a dinosaur; find out how large dinosaurs were by measuring out the actual length and width of a dinosaur. 

Children will:

  • Find out what fossilised footprints can tell us about dinosaurs.
  • Use books, imaginative play and art to build upon dinosaur knowledge.
  • Measure the actual height and length of a dinosaur, discuss size using everyday language.

Session 2 Dinosaur Movements

Objectives

  • Listen attentively in a range of situations.
  • Listen to stories, accurately anticipating key events, and respond to what is heard with relevant comments, questions or actions.
  • Represent own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role play and stories.

English

  • Give well-structured descriptions.

  • Use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share ideas, experiences and imagination.

Lesson Planning

Read the story Saturday Night at the Dinosaur Stomp; become the dinosaurs from the story, experiment with movement around objects in the prehistoric swamp. 

Children will:

  • Listen to a story and respond with dinosaur movements.
  • Describe dinosaur movements they created.
  • Build upon dinosaur knowledge through play experiences and art.

  • Old fabrics
  • Hoops and cones
  • Long sheets of bubble wrap
  • Sponge or objects for printing
  • Glitter, beads and foil

Session 3 The Dinosaur Stomp

Objectives

PE

  • Perform dances using simple movement patterns.

Art

  • Use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share ideas, experiences and imagination.

Lesson Planning

Get ready for the dinosaur stomp! Learn about traditional stick dances and experiment with movements, learn a simple routine and perform a dinosaur stomp!

Children will:

  • Learn a simple stick dance routine.
  • Explore and experiment with ideas though dance and art.
  • Perform a stick dance in assembly.

  • Bubble print capes from session 3
  • Flipchart/IWB set up in the school hall
