Session 1 Life in Britain before the Romans

Objectives

History

  • Develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British history (what Britain was like before the Romans came).
  • Begin to learn about Iron Age culture.

Outcomes
Children will:

  • Begin to understand what daily life was like for the Celts before the Romans invaded.
  • Create a Celtic design similar to those studied.

Session 2 The Romans come to Britain

Objectives

History

  • To find out about the past using evidence from things built and written.
  • To understand the importance of the Roman army in the expansion of the Roman Empire to Britain.
  • To learn more about the structure of the Roman army and how and why it was so effective.

Enquiry question
Why was the Roman army so effective?

Outcomes
Children will:

  • Come to understand how the Roman empire expanded and in what areas.
  • Know when the Romans invaded Britain and something about why.
  • Begin to understand the importance and effectiveness of the Roman army.
  • Create the shield of a Roman soldier.

You Will Also Need

A2 thick card (42cm × 60cm) – 1 per child with the corners rounded off
A thick card strip (30cm × 6cm); Stapler (for handle)
Black marker pens
Sketch books
PVA glue
Red and yellow poster or acrylic paint
Thick and fine brushes
Water pots
Pencils
Sheet of Roman shield designs
Aluminium pie cases (saved and washed) – 1 per child.

Session 3 A soldier's life in the Roman army in Britain

Objectives

History

  • To understand how we find out about the past.
  • To learn about what life was like for Roman soldiers in Britain.
  • To know that Romans used the Latin language and to learn a few Latin commands.

Enquiry question
What was it like to be a Roman soldier in Britain?

Outcomes
Children will:

  • Come to understand more about the lives of Roman soldiers based in Britain.
  • Understand how we know about their lives – including the concept of an historical source and evidence.
  • Produce a letter on wood as if they were a Roman soldier.
  • Obey commands given in Latin.

You Will Also Need

Pieces of thin wood each about the size of a postcard (these could be Balsa wood, but small pieces of wood 12mm thick or thinner would be ideal)
Pens that will write on the wood (sharpies or something similar)

  • How that artefacts can help us to understand what life was like for people in Roman Britain.

  • Come to understand more about the daily lives of Romans in Britain.
  • Recognise and know about some Roman artefacts.
  • Understand how we know about their lives – including the concept of an historical source and evidence.

You Will Also Need

Modelling clay (can use sour dough but proper clay is better)
Small clay tools for scouring
Water pots and brushes
Somewhere to dry and bake the pots

  • Create a game in the style of a Roman game and then learn how to play it.
