Session 1 Life in Britain before the Romans
Objectives
History
- Develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British history (what Britain was like before the Romans came).
- Begin to learn about Iron Age culture.
Enquiry question
What was life like in Britain before the Romans came?
Outcomes
Children will:
- Begin to understand what daily life was like for the Celts before the Romans invaded.
- Create a Celtic design similar to those studied.

Session 2 The Romans come to Britain
Objectives
History
- To find out about the past using evidence from things built and written.
- To understand the importance of the Roman army in the expansion of the Roman Empire to Britain.
- To learn more about the structure of the Roman army and how and why it was so effective.
Enquiry question
Why was the Roman army so effective?
Outcomes
Children will:
- Come to understand how the Roman empire expanded and in what areas.
- Know when the Romans invaded Britain and something about why.
- Begin to understand the importance and effectiveness of the Roman army.
- Create the shield of a Roman soldier.

Sheet of Roman shield designs
Aluminium pie cases (saved and washed) – 1 per child.

Session 3 A soldier's life in the Roman army in Britain
Objectives
History
- To understand how we find out about the past.
- To learn about what life was like for Roman soldiers in Britain.
- To know that Romans used the Latin language and to learn a few Latin commands.
Enquiry question
What was it like to be a Roman soldier in Britain?
Outcomes
Children will:
- Come to understand more about the lives of Roman soldiers based in Britain.
- Understand how we know about their lives – including the concept of an historical source and evidence.
- Produce a letter on wood as if they were a Roman soldier.
- Obey commands given in Latin.
