Celebrate family history and culture. Share your family story, your interests, hobbies and family traditions. Find out what the different cultures represented in the class eat for breakfast and have a class ‘Breakfast Club’ that celebrates the diversity of all.

Session 1 This is us! Part 1

Objectives

Art

  • Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.
  • Use drawing and painting to develop and share ideas, experiences and imagination.
  • Develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.

History

  • Understand historical concepts such as continuity and change.
  • Learn about changes in living memory.

SMSC

  • Enable students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence.
  • Further tolerance and harmony between different cultural tradition by enabling students to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures.

Lesson Planning

Look closely at yourself, colour mix paint to create a realistic self-portrait, Guess Who? Research your family to discover interesting facts/stories that ‘flavour’ your life.

Teaching Outcomes
To mix paint colours that represent individual’s skin tone and hair colour; to create a realistic self-portrait.
To begin research of children's own family’s story.
To learn about different families’ stories and cultural traditions.

Children will:

  • Paint a realistic full-length self portrait.

Objectives

Complete self-portrait and share how your family is unique.

Session 3 My family

Objectives

  • Not be the cause of prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour.

History

  • Understand historical concepts such as continuity and change.
  • Learn about changes in living memory.

Geography

  • Use world maps, atlases + globes to identify UK and its countries, as well as global countries and oceans.

Lesson Planning

Tell others about your family’s story. Write speech bubble to create dynamic display.

Teaching Outcomes
To learn about their own family’s story and cultural traditions and to begin to realise these may be different to those of other people.
To celebrate each person’s uniqueness.
To continue research of own family’s story and to tell these stories to others.
To investigate the location of UK and other countries across the world.

Children will:

  • Increase self-knowledge of their own family and their story, culture and traditions.
  • Celebrate the uniqueness of their family and those of their classmates.

Session 4 Ice creams to shields!

Objectives

SMSC

  • Develop an acceptance that other people having different faiths or beliefs to oneself (or having none) should be accepted and tolerated and should not be the cause of prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour.

History

  • Learn about events beyond living memory that are significant nationally.

Art

  • Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.
  • Use drawing, painting to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.

Lesson Planning

A surprise visit from a knight in armour inspires the creation of shields, symbolising the interests, hobbies and family traditions. Hear about King John and Magna Carta.

Teaching Outcomes
To celebrate each person’s uniqueness and to respect other families' traditions and background stories.
To enthuse children about medieval history, knights; give simple explanation of Magna Carta.
To create shields which use appropriate symbols to capture something of their identity and family tradition.

Children will:

  • Increase self-knowledge by reflecting on their interests & abilities and their family’s story, culture & traditions.
  • Celebrate the uniqueness of each family represented in their class.
  • Develop tolerance, harmony and respect between different people groups.
  • Create their own shield.

  • Use simple compass directions (North, South, East, and West).
  • Use basic geographical vocab for key physical and human features
  • Write own address.

Lesson Planning

What do the different cultures represented in the class eat for breakfast? Write invitations to find out.

Teaching Outcomes
To learn about food enjoyed for breakfast from around the world.
To locate global countries, giving directions from UK and to generate generalized statements about breakfast eating habits according to climate zone and farming practices.

Children will:

  • Develop tolerance, harmony and respect between different people groups.
  • Write an invitation to the breakfast club.
  • Write their own address.
  • Begin to learn about the 4 nations of the UK, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Session 6 Breakfast club celebration!

Objectives

Families provide typical  breakfasts, and children all eat together in a decorated classroom to celebrate diversity in the classroom.

Teaching Outcomes
To learn about food enjoyed for breakfast from around the world.
To locate global countries and generate generalized statements about breakfasts around the world.

Children will:

  • Develop tolerance, harmony and respect between different people groups
  • Celebrate diversity by eating breakfast together
  • Experience food from different parts of the world
  • Location of these countries on the world map and direction from UK
  • Develop awareness of religion and prayer
  • Learn to say thank you
