KS3 Numeracy Year 8
Building Numeracy

Each Building Numeracy unit contains a week’s worth of teaching for students who need to build their understanding of numeracy. Every aspect of numeracy is explicitly explained, so they can be taught by a teacher or a TA. It will take 2 terms to get through all the material, or select the units relevant to your students.

Units consist of three complete sessions plus homework. These sessions provide all you need to teach students who have currently not mastered this numeracy topic, e.g. place value. The teaching and activities are outlined in a word document and the teaching is structured through a PowerPoint presentation to use with the students. The homework activities consolidate the learning. It is envisaged that these three sessions comprise one week’s work for these students, at the end of which, they should have mastered the topic.

Unit 1 Place Value 1 (free)

Objectives

Day 1

  • Understand place value in 5‐digit numbers; Use place value to complete additions and subtractions.

Day 2

  • Compare and order numbers up to 100,000.

Day 3

  • Place numbers to 100,000 on a line.
  • Round 5-digit numbers to nearest 10,000, 1000 and 100.

Lesson Planning

Day 1
An initial 5-minute timed assessment to gauge existing Place Value understanding [PowerPoint Slide 2] Each student will need a copy of the Skill Drill Record Sheet [see below, to be printed] to record their score and ongoing personal bests. Students struggling? Don’t worry – this is what you’ll be teaching them today…

Day 2
Rehearsal of reading and writing numbers to 100,000. Timed: 5mins [PowerPoint Slide 2] Each student will need a copy of the Skill Drill Record Sheet [see below]. Do students need a reminder before you start? Revisit ideas from the previous lesson and refresh the Place Value Chart image. [See today’s PowerPoint Slide 11] Are students struggling once they’ve begun? Can you quickly deal with a small number of students one-to-one, while the remainder complete the task? Or do you need to revise ideas from the previous lesson for the majority? [Revisit the Place Value Chart on today’s PowerPoint Slide 11]

Day 3
Rehearsal of comparing and ordering numbers up to 100,000. Timed: 3mins Don’t forget to update the Skill Drill Record Sheet [see below]! Do students need a reminder before you start? Revisit ideas from the previous lesson and refresh the use of < and > [See today’s PowerPoint Slide 11] Are students struggling once they’ve begun? Quickly deal with a small number of students one-to-one or revise ideas from the previous lesson. [Revisit the use of < and > on today’s Slide 11]

Unit 2 Decimals 1

Objectives

Day 1

  • Understand the place value of each digit in numbers with one decimal place;
  • Place tenths - as decimals and fractions – on a 0-10 landmarked number line.

Day 2

  • Divide by 10 to give numbers with one decimal place and multiply numbers with one decimal place by 10.

Day 3

  • Order numbers with one decimal place, locating on horizontal and vertical number lines.

Lesson Planning

Day 1
Revision of placing numbers to 100,000 on a number line. Timed: 5mins. [PowerPoint Slide 2] Each student will need their copy of the Skill Drill Record Sheet [see below, to be printed for any new students/ lost sheets]. Do students need a reminder before you start? Revisit the number line from last time [See today’s PowerPoint Slide 11] Are students struggling once they’ve begun? Can you quickly deal with a small number of students one-to-one? Or do you need to revisit the number line [today’s PowerPoint Slide 11].

Day 2
Practise reading position on the number line to the nearest tenth and identifying the place value of an underlined digit. [PowerPoint Slide 2] Timed: 5mins Do students need a reminder before you start? Revisit the PV chart and grid from last time [See today’s PowerPoint Slide 11]. Are students struggling once they’ve begun? Can you quickly deal with a small number of students one-to-one? Or do you need to revisit the PV images [today’s PowerPoint Slide 11]. Don’t forget to ask students to complete their Skill Drill Record Sheet.

Day 3
Rehearse multiplying numbers with one decimal place by 10 and dividing by 10 to give numbers with one decimal place. Timed: 5mins [PowerPoint Slide 2] Do students need a reminder before you start? Revisit the PV grid from last time [See today’s PowerPoint Slide 11]. Are students struggling once they’ve begun? Can you quickly deal with a small number of students one-to-one?
