Animals Including Humans

By Suzie Hunt - 17 Sep 2019

Hamilton's 'animals, including humans' science blocks cover all of the key stage 1 and key stage 2 science objectives in this area, such as what animals need to live and how they stay healthy.

They also provide opportunities for skills in thinking scientifically, such as pattern seeking, exploring, problem solving, fair testing, and analysing secondary sources. Many sessions include extended writing opportunities linked to different types of fiction and non-fiction texts.

See all of our science blocks or read on to discover those focused on 'animals, including humans'.

Animals Including Humans in Key Stage 1

Year 1 - Ourselves
Learn all about your bodies and senses in this exploratory block. Observe changes over time and think about how we change as we get older. Collect data, look for patterns and carry out investigations.

Year 1 - Our Pets
Look carefully at the behaviour and habitats of creatures you find in the school grounds. Learn about animals close to and in the home, with a particular focus on the pets we keep and how we keep them happy and healthy.

Year 1/2 - Amazing Me!
Think carefully about what you were like as a baby and how your body has changed since then. Compare foot and hand sizes to make a class display. Consider how to investigate what we can hear in the playground. Investigate fruit and vegetables and plan a balanced picnic for guests.

Year 1/2 - Wild and Wonderful Creatures
Sort plastic animal toys into groups and learn about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. Create show box dioramas for a toy animal and annotate it with researched information. Make a micro-safari for a toy car, with a recorded message for the pretend drivers!

Year 1/2 - People and their Pets
Observe creatures in the school grounds; photograph them and make sketches. Collect woodlice and establish colonies in the classroom based on what children know about their habitats. Plan an investigation to test what sort of paper will be best for the job of mopping up a puppy's accident . Talk about and design a good pet and observe different pets in the classroom.

Year 2 - Healthy Animals
Hatch eggs and study the life cycle of chickens. Understand that exercise makes the heart work harder and is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Find out about healthy lunch box foods before designing and sharing your own snack.

Key Stage 1 - Carnival of the Animals

Why not support your study of 'animals, including humans' with Hamilton's Carnival of the Animals key stage 1 cross-curricular topic? The music of Saint-Saëns inspires learning about mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians and fossils from around the world.

Year 3 - Keeping Healthy
Become a team of personal trainers for clients in need of expert health, dietary and training advice. Develop specialised knowledge, skills and understanding in nutrition, muscles, bones and joints and conduct your own research in order to answer client’s questions. Make a presentation tailored to your client’s needs that will set them on the road to a healthier life style.

Year 3/4 - Fit for Success
Teignford hockey team have not won a match all season, and now is the time to turn things around if they want to win the league next year. Can you take on the challenge of coaching them to fitness? They need a whole pack of advice on diet, exercise and how to prevent injury, not to mention positive team spirit and self belief!

Year 3/4 - The Circle of Life
Our amazing planet is teeming with life from the depths of the oceans to the highest mountains. But every living thing is dependent on other living things for its survival. It is an endless circle of life. Your task is to share this amazing never ending story with an audience through dance, music and narration.

Year 5 - Life Explorers
One of the big publishing houses in the UK has approached you to write a children’s non-fiction book about the human lifecycle. Can you research and collate information on growth, development, puberty and old age, and present it in a sensitive and logical way that is suited to children aged 8-12? Are you up for the challenge of creating a visually appealing and marketable book that will fly off the shelves?

Year 5/6 - The Human Species
You have been approached to create an exhibition about the human species. Can you research and collate information on growth, development, puberty and old age, and present it in a sensitive and logical way that is suited to your audience? Create sculptures and sketches that not only reflect the complexity of the human body but also act as an accurate and informative presentation of the complex systems that help make us human.

Year 6 - The Art of Being Human
The link between the arts and science has always been a complex one, but you are going to create an exhibition of art work that not only reflects the beautiful complexity of the human body but also acts as an accurate and informative presentation of the complex systems that help make us human. You will need to exhibit your art for others to see and learn from.

Hamilton also provide a complete range of science planning for Living Things and Their Habitats and for Life Cycles.
